The County of San Luis Obispo (“SLO”) recently announced the availability of cannabis microbusiness licenses for businesses operating within the unincorporated areas of SLO County.
A microbusiness license permits the combination of at least three of the following activities: cultivation (less than 10,000 square feet), manufacturing, distribution, and/or retail sales.
In order to qualify for a SLO county cannabis microbusiness license, businesses must first obtain a valid microbusiness license issued by the State of California Department of Cannabis Control.
Application Process + Fees
- State License: First, secure a microbusiness license from the California Department of Cannabis Control.
- Local Approval: Next, obtain land use authorization from the County Planning and Building Department.
- County Application: Finally, complete the County Cannabis Business License application through the Sheriff’s Office.
- Background Check: All Owners of the business will need to schedule an appointment with the Sheriff’s Office to complete a background check.
For those cannabis businesses that currently hold multiple licenses (three or more) in SLO county, they may be eligible to convert their licenses into a microbusiness license. Contact the SLO Tax Collector’s office for more information on that conversion process.
The current application business license fee is $44 for each business type (a $4 required fee for the State Disability Access program is included in the application fee and renewal fee). This application fee is non-refundable. Additionally, there is also an annual Cannabis Tax Compliance fee of $3,918 per license.
